Am I skipping the ship?

Bit intriguing I guess and you may be curious what I am going on about.

So just recently I decided I want a change and I want something else from my business and instead of specializing solely on portraiture, offer more lifestyle approach to my sessions across all my packages.

No biggie you may think, but from where I was sat, it felt like I’m turning my back to years of experience, learning and skills; that what I’m known for will not matter anymore and the fear of I’m not good enough at it will kick in, the well known imposter syndrome and comparison... And then I reminded myself that actually if I do what I always did, I will get what I always got ;)

It is not that I’m a total newbie in a lifestyle photography, never challenge myself or that I fear I wont deliver what I promised, I already offer my Motherhood and Fatherhood packages in reportage style, and that is exactly what excites me right now, the memories preserving as they happen, story telling and characters shining through in the pictures... So not, I am not skipping the ship, I just changed direction!

It is people who make me feel content, comfortable and at ease, that’s why I always felt a great comfort in my home studio I guess. And I am not saying it is wrong to have a studio session to update your family portrait! Not at all! But... I realized that pictures of children smiling and looking at the camera wouldn’t make memories for my clients. I know they wouldn’t for me anyway. I won’t lie and say that I never take those pictures, of course I do, I do love looking direct to their eyes, their faces smiling at me, grandparents and our extended family love getting those as their Christmas cards.  But that’s not how it happens in everyday life, not how I want to remember it. Some of the best memorable pictures I have taken are of my kids doing their quirky things and then their sibling doing the same random things few years on!!! or their faces when they opened kinder egg surprise or a present, the sheer joy and sparkly eyes!

So what I wanted to say here is that no, I am not doing anything even remotely new but I am changing directions on what I want to offer to my families and couples and what I want them to feel when they go through their album of photographs in years time and say “Do you remember when...” and knowing that the little piece of me and my skills had a lasting effect and left something worth to remember <3

I want to share with you a snippet of our family gallery probably last 2 years, I am very organized and have my photos sorted by months so it is really easy to remember when...

My kids are so different but they share lots of interests too like their random love for snails, the love for dress up, shoes, water and lego is immense in our house; I want to remember the sensitive nature of my eldest, his passion for all sports but mostly football and his belief there is no boy-girl thing; my nurturing, inquisitive, kind, yet strong willed girl who lives for friendships but is so content in her own world at the same time; the cheekiness of little one and how openly he shares his love with us; and of course the dog, he has been with us nearly 9 years now and his time on our laps gradually decreased with every new baby we had, but he is part of our family and despite of his quirks (this would be for whole new blog) we love him really <3

Introducing Lifestyle Newborn package

Lifestyle photography

Capturing new love, connection and growing bond between you and your new baby.

In-home lifestyle photoshoot blending documentary and portrait photography to capture your story.

My heart sang when I unexpectedly got the opportunity to create something I wanted for quite a while. I have done many lifestyle shoots before, my mother/fatherhood packages, some families, even newborn sessions however I wanted to add something new to the mix, something that created a depth to the story.

I am totally a photographer at heart, I wouldn't even dream of classing myself a videographer but adding a video to the mix felt too appealing to miss so I decided I will become a video clips maker to emphasise the still photos. They are just short clips but the effect when they are bonded with photographs is just... heartwarming, gives you goosebumps of the thought not to remember these and make it so so real!

Roberts Family

It was such a pleasure to meet this family in their home. I was greeted with overexcited puppy and quite excited toddler who didn't waste much time to show me his fav toys. We decided to shoot mainly in the master bedroom because it was the lightest room in the house.

There were fun times, quiet moments and all the 'normal' everyday bits but these moments felt so precious, consciously getting together as a family, enjoying the present moments and giving full attention to each other...

Here is the sample movie, set to the music from bensound.

Fatherhood photoshoot = Fun at home with West Family

Lifestyle photography for dad and daughter in their own home.

My lovely friend bought this Fatherhood photoshoot for her husband as a Father's day gift!

With baby #2's  arrival fast approaching, it was a great opportunity to capture the playfulness these two share! It was fun, relaxed and limitless...

Comments welcome!

My first Fatherhood photoshoot with Kevin & Ethan {1.5yrs old}

The location shoot took place in Belfairs Woods in Leigh and we were very lucky with the weather. The rain literally started when we finished!

This was quite exciting for me! I have already done few of the Motherhood photoshoots and this time the focus was on a bond between dad & his son.

We started off together, dog included, and tried to encourage Ethan to wander off with dad but in the end we decided it would be best for mummy to leave us to it. It worked well and we have a lovely selection of pictures of the boys together and some sneaky ones of mummy too.

I love the last one of Ethan running back to his mummy but tripping over and catching him mid-fall, this makes me go ‘awww’ so sharing it with you <3

More information about Motherhood or Fatherhood Photoshoots is on my website or please message me here or my FB page.

Comments and feedback always welcome!

I am expanding my newborn photography services...

Some exciting things are happening behind the scenes and I would love to share the news with you!

From September I will be offering a new service – Lifestyle newborn photography. FRESH. CANDID. TIMELESS.

It was a while coming and as for all my photography ventures, it comes from my “needs” or “wants”, whether is a new challenge or just curiosity to try something new.

I would be the first to admit that I am a bit of control freak (in a good way btw lol) and strive for perfection in my photography, if baby allows me I will get the shot right! With our third baby’s arrival (now this is a year ago!) we opted to hire a reportage style photographer because my children are SO DIFFICULT to capture!! I am not even joking, it takes skills, I tell you.

Anyway, we adore them! In retrospect I wish I was a bit more relaxed about the shoot (I guess I have certain expectations as it is my profession) however I feel so apprehensive of the result that it is difficult to enjoy it (hence my children act the way they do but that’s for another blog). It wasn’t an easy shoot either, we had 2 sets of grandparents involved and it’s lots of people to manage plus my expectations lol…. BUT I could see that everyone around me responded so well, especially my mum who can be so stiff when camera turns her way!

With that in mind, I wanted to incorporate reportage style within my newborn photography but stay true to myself (always) and allow a hint of portraiture (that’s what I do and love) and offer something bit more unique and fresh. So I am on my way on yet another venture J That said, I am still doing my dreamy newborn style photos and I have some new things coming up in that style soon so watch the space too!

Little bit more about how it works and what’s involved…

This photoshoot takes 2 hours and it’s all about capturing you and your baby in your own surroundings where you feel the most comfortable and safe, capturing all the little expressions you want to look at all day long (I did anyway), feeding, rocking, settling, cuddling and just be, all captured in beautiful selection of images.

Also I will be bringing my mini set with me (beanbag, selection of wraps and blankets) to capture some beautiful portraits of your baby (sleepy or awake) as I would normally in my usual newborn photoshoot but there is no pressure on baby sleeping, therefor no stress on parents part either.

Preferably this session is suitable from 5 days old and ideally done within 2 weeks of baby’s arrival however few weeks older babies would be perfect also so I am open to offer this to upto 2 months old babies (for lifestyle children or family photoshoots please refer to Lifestyle on my home page).

If this resonates with you and would like to know more, I would love to send you my Newborn Welcome Guide with more information about my newborn services, to share more about the experience and what your investments includes. Please get in touch via my facebook page @photographybypetra or email me on petra436@btinternet.com

Test shoot is done and here is an album of 4 days old Beatrice <3 Claire & Adam, thank you so much for making me so welcome in your home!

It is possible even at 8 weeks old...

First I planned to go home for May half term and do this newborn shoot for my sister’s second baby but somehow life got in the way and perhaps it wasn’t meant to be as I would miss his birth anyway.

So here I am and Damian is 8 weeks old now. Knowing my sister actually had a newborn session done by a local photographer was a big relief and less pressure on me to create those dreamy photos, as at 8 weeks old babies don’t tend to be so sleepy and accepting repositioning so easily.

The temperature outside was reaching nearly 40C so there was certainly no need for a fan and the hot weather for sure helped to keep him sleeping most of the time.

The focus of this shoot was capturing siblings together. He is already smiling a lot and holds long eye contact so it was lovely to capture him holding onto Sabina, smiling. I love shooting against the light as it gives the photo lovely, almost 3D effect with gorge depth of field (also known as bokeh) so there are lovely impromptu photos from when we first met. The sleepy and more posed ones were done on another day.

I am happy that I could take those (as I have done for Sabina when she was around 3 months old) and I can already see how different these two are personalities-wise ;)

Please feel free to comment and leave any feedback and you are welcome to share!

We found the flowers but decided otherwise...

For those who saw my video from yesterday, here is the end result :) or if you missed the wobbly video feel free to check it out here lol!

Needless to say that the black Tshirt I wore, wasn’t a winner in 38C but what a superstar my 6 year old niece Sabina! She was probably boiling in that princess dress but no sign of complaint from her!

To be honest, I was a little bit worried how the session will pan out. Obviously she knows me (we see each other yearly, sometimes more often) but when I photographed her previously, she wasn't very keen and was very shy, she used to hid from me every time I had a camera in my hands so I hoped that she will be excited wearing her new dress and also having a new brother (whose photos I will share soon) – this was her time only and to my surprise she did amazingly!

We found some flowers my sister was so keen on, they were a bit high for her so in the end I only took few shots (psst! she doesn’t know) and concentrated on getting some lovely portraits of her in more suitable dress in that heat (I am really missing emojis typing on laptop lol, I am emoji junkie).

Any comments and feedback welcome and if you are interested in children photo session, please contact me. More info here

How I did a lifestyle photoshoot in my home studio

My recent session inquiry started something like this: We would like to book for a family lifestyle session but we want to come to your home based studio as we are in a process of moving and our style is quite minimalistic and would like more clean background pictures (in nutshell anyway).

I wouldn't be telling you this story if I thought - yeah that's fine!

Firstly I worried I can't get lifestyle photos in my bare looking studio room! Secondly the family session was exactly that -family session, which I can honestly say I don't remember if that ever happened to me! Normally parents shy away from the camera and it is normally me encouraging them to participate bit more (especially newborn sessions). I absolutely get it but you - yourselves take hundreds or thousands images of your children yet you most probably have less of the ones with you in them or all of you in your images. And yes, there are the popular selfies, but not often they do justice to whatever emotion or activity you want to capture as we get so preoccupied with which button to press, where on the phone i am looking, who is actually looking and the list goes on.

I am not saying let's not do individual photos of children! I make sure (twice a year) I have lovely portraits of my children to change over in the frames or give to family members but I also have yearly family photoshoot i am included in. It's not only important for us to document our family unit but for your children and future generations...

Anyway, this session scared me a little as I wasn't sure how I can be in charge of  what we are doing next, looking as naturally as possible, capturing the essence of their family life and without looking at the camera most/all of the time.

I must say they were absolutely amazing, totally embraced how the session naturally unfolded, concentrating on what was so important for them to document, interaction with their lovely baby, the joy, the love they showed. It absolutely surprised me(!) how much I enjoyed the session (I really wasn't sure at the beginning), I included parents in every image taken individually or together and I was so pleased with the flow of the session. I got a lovely message afterwards how much they enjoyed the shoot and they love their photos. I am sharing it because I wanted to show that it is possible without being too staged and that actually it could have been done in their house if you didn't know otherwise.

Any feedback or comment is appreciated! Apologies for any grammar mistakes, this is how I speak ;)
